Overview

The Prairie Ocular Pathology Service (POPS) provides specialized ocular pathology interpretation for veterinarians across Canada. As part of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) Centre of Excellence, POPS combines decades of technical histology expertise with advanced diagnostic insight from board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists (ACVO) and pathologists (ACVP).

POPS also supports WCVM’s internationally recognized Ocular Mystery Slide Sessions, contributing to the education and training of ophthalmology residents from around the world.

What We Diagnose

POPS offers expert interpretation of ocular and periocular submissions, including:

  • Eyelid lesions
  • Periocular and orbital lesions
  • Exenterations
  • Eviscerations
  • Enucleations

Our team is trained in the proper handling and interpretation of ocular tissues, ensuring clinically meaningful, accurate reports for complex ophthalmic conditions.

Comprehensive Diagnostic Reports

Each POPS case includes a detailed digital diagnostic report featuring:

  • Gross and histological images
  • Interpretations from ACVO and ACVP-trained veterinarians
  • PAS staining included for all enucleation specimens
  • Access to over 40 additional histochemical stains when needed
  • Expert guidance and clinically relevant interpretive comments

With more than 50 years of combined histology experience, our laboratory delivers consistently high-quality slide preparation and specialized ocular tissue handling.

Web-Based Access & Digital Tools

POPS integrates seamlessly with the PDS Web Client Portal, offering:

  • Real-time online reporting
  • Digital imaging of gross and microscopic findings
  • Online access to case history and archived results
  • Online submission forms and case management tools

Our fully equipped, modern histology laboratory provides:

  • Precision processing of ocular tissues
  • PAS & H&E staining for all enucleation specimens
  • Optional special stains (40+ available)
  • Dedicated handling protocols for optimal tissue preservation

Submission Notes

Preferred fixative: Davidson’s Fixative

PDS is no longer able to supply Davidson’s fixative due to WHMIS regulations.

It can be purchased directly from Fisher Scientific Canada.
